Tesla Vision Park Assist measurement system proves capable in first tests

Posted by in categories: sustainability, transportation

Tesla Vision Park Assist provides visual and audio alerts of surrounding objects. This feature uses the occupancy network to predict high-definition outlines of objects 360 degrees around the car. Note: Tesla Vision Park Assist is for guidance purposes only and is not a substitute for an aware driver. Please be attentive and avoid obstacles as required.

This is after being parked for a while, interesting to see how park assist takes a bit to load previous data from before it was parked. Still really impressive work from the @Tesla team pic.twitter.com/LONqouXp85

A number of Tesla owners with vision-only cars who received update 2023.6.9 have shared initial videos of Vision Park Assist’s performance in real-world situations. Tesla Model 3 owner @EVBaymax, for one, observed that the distance estimates displayed in the vehicle are quite accurate, almost to the inch. The Model 3 owner actually verified Tesla Vision’s estimates with a tape measure, and it was quite accurate.

Enjoy the Singularity: How to Be Optimistic About the Future

Posted by in categories: robotics/AI, singularity, transportation

I’m already fairly optimistic. Y2K was supposed to drop planes of the sky. Yet we’re here. You’re more likely to die in a car wreck than plane wreck yet most people are more scared of flying than driving and flipping off people with road rage.

From ChatGPT to driverless cars, we need to be hopeful about progress.

Ford to build next-gen EV truck at $5.6B factory in 2025

Posted by in categories: sustainability, transportation

Ford said Friday that its $5.6 billion BlueOval City complex outside of Memphis, Tennessee will include a truck plant capable of producing 500,000 electric vehicles a year.

The first vehicle to come off the line will be a next-gen electric truck, code named Project T3, in 2025.

Construction at BlueOval City, the epicenter for its future EV and battery cell manufacturing and a key component toward its goal to sell 2 million EVs annually by late 2026, began last fall.

Biohybrid robot made with mouse muscles successfully walks, might think and boink later

Posted by in categories: nuclear energy, robotics/AI, transportation

Robots in their current form contribute far more to our modern day life than you may realise. They may not be the sci-fi androids many imagine, but they’re hard at work doing tasks like building cars, or learning how to control nuclear fusion (opens in new tab). Only in recent years are we starting to see robots like you might have imagined as a kid, with Boston Dynamics’ creations doing all sorts of crazy stunts (opens in new tab) like dancing (opens in new tab) or guarding Pompeii (opens in new tab).

Robotics isn’t all about metal machines it turns out, and biohybrid robots may be part of our cyberpunk future too. It’s only been a few days since I was introduced to OSCAR, an artist’s rendition of a disgustingly meaty, pulsating flesh robot (opens in new tab). As wonderful and vivid as those videos are, it’s a good time to take a palette cleanser with a look at a real-world biohybrid robot.

GitHub’s Copilot goes beyond code completion, adds a chat mode and more

Posted by in categories: robotics/AI, transportation

GitHub is announcing its Copilot X initiative today, an extension of its work on its popular Copilot code completion tool, which originally launched into preview all the way back in 2021. With this, the Microsoft-owned company is launching a code-centric chat mode for Copilot that helps developers write and debug their code, as well as Copilot for pull requests, AI-generated answers about documentation and more. Unsurprisingly, these new features are powered by OpenAI’s GPT-4, though it’s worth noting that, mostly for latency reasons, the code completion tool remains on GitHub’s Codex model, which it derived from GPT-3.

“With the new model coming online, we asked ourselves: what’s the next step? What’s the next step for Copilot? We believe that for auto completion, we nailed that scenario,” GitHub CEO Thomas Dohmke told me.
