Dr. Sandeep S. Karajanagi

Sandeep S. Karajanagi, Ph.D. is Instructor of Surgery, Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital Voice Center; and Research Associate, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), Professor Robert Langer Lab, Department of Chemical Engineering.

Sandeep has a proven track record of original publications and intellectual property generation (16 publications, 3 Patent applications – one licensed). His education and experience so far has equipped him with excellent problem solving skills and has given him a wide breadth of knowledge in engineering, nanotechnology, biomedical technology, translational research, and new product development.

In Professor Langer’s lab, he developed novel injectable soft hydrogels (Patent pending) that are currently in the process of being manufactured at a CMO for testing in a clinical trial. His responsibilities at MGH include identifying the pathway and the resources required to conduct the clinical trial. He works in collaboration with Regulatory, Toxicology, and Clinical consultants, and with a CMO to execute all the activities leading to the Clinical Trial. In addition, he leads a research group focused on developing biomaterials, tissue-engineering and drug-delivery- based approaches for the treatment of laryngeal conditions and diseases.

Sandeep has experience in developing novel biomedical materials, understanding tissue response to biomaterials, evaluating the safety and efficacy of the biomaterials using in vitro, ex vivo, and in vivo methods, the regulatory issues concerning biomaterials and biologics, and other aspects of translational research and commercial contract manufacture.

Prior to joining the Langer lab, he earned his Ph.D. at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Chemical and Biological Engineering. In his doctoral work, co-advised by professors Ravi Kane and Jonathan Dordick, he prepared and extensively studied conjugates of proteins with nanoscale materials such as carbon nanotubes and nanoparticles. His doctoral work resulted in 11 publications and one patent application.

Sandeep coauthored Structure and Function of Enzymes Adsorbed onto Single-Walled Carbon Nanotubes, Three-Dimensional Hydrogel Model Using Adipose-Derived Stem Cells for Vocal Fold Augmentation, Increasing Protein Stability through Control of the Nanoscale Environment, Water-Soluble Carbon Nanotube-Enzyme Conjugates as Functional Biocatalytic Formulations, Directed Assembly of Carbon Nanotubes at Liquid-Liquid Interfaces: Nanoscale Conveyors for Interfacial Biocatalysis, and Protein-Directed Formation of Silver Nanoparticles on Carbon Nanotubes.

His specialties include: biomaterials, nanomaterials, protein structure and function, biocatalysis, stem cells, polymer nanocomposites, soft-tissue augmentation and repair, tissue engineering, biomedical devices, experience in evaluating and developing pathways for getting FDA approval for biomaterials, and active involvement in invention and translation of biomaterials from bench into the clinic. He is also knowledgeable in AFM, SEM, TEM, FT-IR, FACS, immunohistochemistry, RT-PCR, and mammalian cell culture.
