Karl Schroeder, M.A.

Karl Schroeder, M.A. is one of Canada’s most popular science fiction and fantasy authors.
 
Karl divides his time between writing fiction and analyzing, conducting workshops and speaking on the future impact of science and technology on society. As the author of eleven novels he’s been translated into French, German, Spanish, Russian, and Japanese. In addition to his more traditional fiction, he’s pioneered a new mode of writing that blends fiction and rigorous futures research — his influential short novels Crisis in Zefra (2005) and Crisis in Urlia (2011) are innovative “scenario fictions” commissioned by the Canadian army as study and research tools. While doing all of this he recently completed a Master’s degree in Strategic Foresight and Innovation at OCAD University in Toronto.
 
He married Janice Beitel in April 2001 — they tied the knot in a tropical bird sanctuary on the shore of the Indian Ocean, Kalbarri Western Australia. Their daughter Paige was born in May 2003. He lives in East Toronto where he’s writing about the evolution of post-bureaucratic governance in the 2025–2035 period. He is Founding Member and Past President of SF Canada.
 
Karl authored Sun of Suns: Book One of Virga, Queen of Candesce: Book Two of Virga, Pirate Sun: Book Three of Virga, The Sunless Countries: Book Four of Virga, Ashes of Candesce: Book Five of Virga, The Engine of Recall, Lady of Mazes, Permanence (Winner of the 2003 Aurora Award), and Ventus, and he coauthored The Claus Effect.
 
His academic papers include Open Source Biotechnology Platforms for Global Health and Development: Two Case Studies and Africa’s largest long-lasting insecticide-treated net producer: lessons from A to Z Textiles.
